Acceptance Speech - 2006 Golden Melody Award (Best Male Vocalist)
Thank you all for your congratulations! It is a great honor for me to win this award again, after 7 years!
I wanted to take the opportunity in my acceptance speech to talk a bit about the importance of practicing, and to encourage the audience to work hard. Unfortunately, the speech time was limited and I was only able to say some of what I wanted to say. Here's what I REALLY wanted to say:
I never thought that I had a good voice. In 1999, when I won this
award for the first time, I knew there were serious problems and
limitations in my voice that were caused by bad habits and poor
technique. I was struggling with my voice and sometimes it even hurt
when I sang. Honestly, when I received that award, it scared me. I
thought, "My voice doesn't do what I want it to...how can someone with all these vocal problems be the best male vocalist of the year?!"
From that point on, I worked on my voice harder than ever despite many people saying, "Singing can't be learned. You've either got it, or you don't." Never believe someone who tries to tell you you can't do something. If you really want it bad enough, you'll find a way. But most people HATE practicing because it forces them to face their weaknesses and magnify what they aren't good at. Practicing makes us feel uncomfortable and can sometimes shake our confidence. But you don't improve by staying in the comfort zone. You won't improve without venturing beyond what you already know.
Seven years later, I still don't think I have a great voice, but I
know I am a better singer than before. These improvements have come
SLOWLY as the result of commitment and faithful adherence to a
vocalizing regiment. I practice almost every day, and always warm up
before every performance (even if it's just an autographing session).
I focus on the difficult passages of each song (instead of just
enjoying the easy parts) and work on them until they become easier.
This often sounds awful and can be embarrassing when people happen to
listen to me practice. But it works. And if practicing can work for
me, it can for you too.
Whether you are a singer, an actor, professional athlete, or WHATEVER, practice is key to getting better results. "Gong yu shan qi shi bi xian li qi qi. 工欲善其事 必先利其器" For a school student, practice might mean preparing for a test and working on your weaknesses (unfamiliar material). Hate practicing? Well I've grown to love it.
I sincerely hope the new Chinese artists can realize the importance of practicing. Our competitors should not be each other, but rather, the international artists who have historically set the standard in
popular music. I know if we put in the hard work to improve our
skills, we will be one step closer to making Chinese pop music a
worldwide phenomenon.

I appreciate all the discussion over the past few days about my album, "心中的日月 ". It is so different from anything I've done in
the past, and as I have repeatedly stated, is a new beginning, the
attempt to create a clearer sonic identity for Chinese hip-hop music,
the, "Chinked-out" style. Whether I succeeded or not in this goal,
only time will tell. I definitely don't expect everyone to "get it"
right away...and that's ok!
To me, making music is not about winning awards. Creating songs that
I believe in and sharing them with the world is my greatest joy and I
feel blessed to be able to do what I love. That to me, is where all
the success is. If I win awards, if my album sells well, that's just
a bonus.
I know my supporters feel strongly about this album, and so do I. But I don't care if it doesn't win an award, so please don't feel bad! In fact many of the most important musical works in history were critically denounced at the time.
I'd rather spend my time and energy moving forward, helping to create,not destroy, what so many young Chinese composer/artists like myself are devoting our lives to: the best music we can make. If you'd rather hear music that is more "輕鬆", there's plenty out there!
But I believe that our music is our culture, and someday soon the
whole world will listen to Chinese pop music, and thru it, understand
more about Chinese people. I hope my positive energy spreads to you
all as well. Don't be angry, it's not worth it!

我知道我的支持者對這張專輯有著強烈的感覺, 我也是一樣. 但是, 如果它得不到任何的獎 我並不在乎. 所以, 請你們也不要為此感到難過! 事實上, 歷史上許多重要的音樂作品, 在它們發表的當時都曾被嚴厲的批判過.
我寧願把我的時間和精力放在前瞻的視野, 幫助去創造, 而不是去毀滅, 許多像我一樣年輕的華語音樂創作人,為我們能做到的最好的音樂奉獻我們的精力. 如果您寧願聽一些所謂” 輕鬆的” 音樂, 在目前的環境中, 您已經有很多的選擇. 然而, 我相信我們的音樂就是我們的文化, 即將來臨的有一天, 全世界的人會開始聽我們華語的流行音樂, 透過我們的音樂更進一步了解我們.

10 is a big number, but I feel as if I’ve only just begun. It’s been an honor and a thrill to be a part of the ever-evolving Chinese music scene since 1995’s release of my first album, “Qing Di Beethoven”. Since then, I have constantly challenged and experimented, letting the music take me on a journey I could never have in my wildest dreams imagined. I feel as if I’ve been “there and back again,” seen so much, hear so much, dance so much, and yet…”Xin Zhong De Ri Yue”, now my 10th album, marks the beginning of a completely new journey.
10是個很大的數字,但我覺得自己彷彿還只剛開始。自從1995年發行第一張專輯「情敵貝多芬」至今,很榮耀、也很興奮能在日漸成長的華語樂壇,成為當中的一份子。打從那時起,我不斷地挑戰和實驗,企圖讓音樂帶領我超越想像以外、最狂野的夢。一切就好像是「歷險歸來」,看過許多事、聽過許多聲音、跳過許多舞,而後的是現在這第10張專輯「心中的日月」,標誌著一段全新旅程的開始。
The album’s conception started with the following premises:
這張專輯的概念是始自幾個前提:
1) Though Chinese presence grows in the global community, the world’s understanding of Chinese people, pop culture and music still lags behind. As much as we hate to admit it, we are still faced with age-old stereotypes and unjust prejudices that need addressing.
1) 雖然華人已在全球經濟展露頭角,但世界對華人還有其流行文化、音樂的了解還是遠遠落後。我們不想承認,但是目前還是得面臨別人多年來的刻板印象和不公平的成見,這些都是需要釐清的。
2) Chinese pop music does not have a strong enough sonic identity. Instead of being purely karaoke driven, instead of covering or imitating other countries’ popular songs, we can focus on developing our own sound, drawing from the rich resources that abound in Chinese culture.
2) 華語流行音樂並沒有一個夠強烈的聽覺身分,除了創作卡拉OK曲、除了翻唱或模仿其他國家的流行歌曲外,我們可以把焦點放在發展我們自己的聲音,試著從中華文化的豐富資源中去探求。
Then, I coined the term “chinked-out”. Derived from the historically derogatory racial slur “chink”, used to out-down Chinese people, “chinked-out” repossesses the word, turns its negative connotations upside-down, and uses them as material to fuel the new sound of this music. The term describes an effort to create a sound that is international, and at the same time, Chinese. In this album, I decided to implement some of China’s most precious and untapped resources, the musics of its “shao shu min zu,” or ethnic minorities, concentrating on the regions of Yunnan, Shangri-La, Tibet, Xinjiang and Mongolia. This is NOT one of those “world music” CDs. It’s an R&B/hip-hop album that creates a new vibe the whole world can identify as being Chinese.
於是,我創了一個新名詞「中式嬉哈(chinked-out)」。這是源自”chink”(譯註:原意為中國佬、清奴)--一個長久以來被援用來輕視華人的字眼,但「chinked-out」重新定位了原本的詞,完全轉化其原有的負面涵義,新名詞使用這些內涵作為激發音樂新聲音的材料,用以形容我們努力創造很國際、同時很華人的新聽覺。在這張專輯裡,我注入一些中國最珍貴而尚未被拿來運用的資源,比方說少數民族的音樂,尤其是雲南、香格里拉、西藏、新疆和蒙古等地區。然而,這「不是」張世界音樂專輯,它仍是R&B/嬉哈音樂、一張創造了全世界可定位為華人音樂的新作品。

王力宏談的創作之「火」
有人說我寫的這首歌「火」是抄襲,我的回答是:「你該多聽一些國外的音樂!聽不是為了要模仿,而是為了要訓練自己的耳朵,教自己的耳朵該怎麼去聽音樂。」
有一些歌沒那麼表面,背後的創作者在寫這首歌的時候,是有他的道理跟目的。
每一種風格和style的歌,都有他的規則。好比說,藍調是什麼?藍調就是一個12小節的型式,和大致固定的和弦;如果我寫一首藍調的歌,你會說我抄襲Eric Clapton,或B.B.King嗎?當然不是,創作藍調的挑戰是如何在這些規則裡面創新。
我一直認為國語歌可以超越自己,也可以嘗試更新的曲風。如我幫A-mei寫的這首「火」,它是最近美國流行音樂的一個新的movement,我很希望國語歌能嘗試的。Justin Timberlake的「Like I Love You」,No Doubt的「Hella Good」以及N.E.R.D.的「She Wants to Move」,都是這個新的movement「哈辣」(一種節奏的模式)style最好的例子。
我在研究這3首歌的時候,我注意到了他們相似的地方,甚至速度都一模一樣,115 b.p.m(beats per minute)!在「火」的編曲裡面,我也挑了115 b.p.m.,我有故意放一個小節跟No Doubt一模一樣拍子的鼓;這個是我刻意給這首歌的效果,就好像Shrek裡面Fiona跳起來學Matrix表現的空中功夫;透過這首歌編曲的細節,就像留下了幾個伏筆,把「哈辣」style的規則跟聲音呈現給聽眾,但是關於這首歌本身,詞、曲、和弦,還有整體的概念,它是一首全新的創意。
我相信任何新的嘗試總有它的冒險,如果有人誤會我創作這首歌的意思,希望看了這篇文章之後能讓你了解,這些決定不是因為我沒有音樂的想法去抄了別人的作品,而是因為我有很多音樂的想法,想要讓聽國語歌曲的人去探索。

Dear friends,
Over the past few years, I have spent countless hours in the studio trying to be a greater producer.
One of my favorite things to do in the studio (other than music ^_^) is to read the e-mails from my fans from all over the world giving me warm words of encouragement. Because I have you all, my studio is never a lonely place & I'm always in great company, able to stay focused on what's most important to me: the music itself. Thanks for giving me the best support I can dream of everyday, but today especially, the day after the " 2004 Golden Melody Awards Producer of Year" title was awarded to me!! This was the best Mother's Day gift for Wang Mama & Po Po, AND Happy MOTHER'S DAY to you & your families.
Well, time for me to get back to the studio... the new stuff is sounding good and I can't wait to let you all hear it SOON... Thanks again! You are the best!

In Memory of Leslie Cheung
When I was in high school, I worked at the local video rental store in Rochester, New York. It was my job to know everything about the videos in stock, so that I could make recommendations to the customers, and answer their questions.
I loved this job mostly because I could watch the movies for free, and even take them home for the night after the store closed. I remember, watching "Farewell My Concubine" for the first time in my family room, and from that moment on, idolized Leslie Cheung.
When I met Leslie for the first time, it was at Hong Kong’s "Green Spot" pub after an awards ceremony in 1999. Everything was new to me, as it was my first album in Hong Kong. I was already in awe of the evening, and there was Leslie Cheung, walking right up to me! He spoke, and my jaw dropped. First of all, because I had no idea Leslie’s English was so perfect. He spoke in an elegant British accent, which suited his style so appropriately. Secondly, because he asked ME to go up on the Green Spot stage with him to sing a duet together, "Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me"! I played the piano and sung Elton John’s part, and he sung George Michael’s. I remember every moment of that performance like it was yesterday, the way Leslie stood center stage looking totally at ease, making eye contact with me, and the audience, comfortable and in control although we had never rehearsed, never discussed the song, never even met before! We had a chemistry, although perfect strangers, that during the performance convinced us both that this was the beginning of beautiful friendship. That night, he told me to call him Uncle Leslie, which is how I have referred to him to this day.
Onstage, Uncle Leslie’s talents are formidable. His singing, dancing, and acting exude a style all his own. He is one of the handful of artists that I respect most in all of Asia because of his true talent, mixed with brains, integrity, and passion. He sets the standard for the new generation of young artists in Asia because he is our role model, our idol, and we adore him.
Offstage, Uncle Leslie’s talents are even more impressive. His personality is one of a kind. He is the friendliest person I know. Whenever I stayed in Hong Kong, he would always make me feel at home. "If you ever get tired of eating room service, or staying in hotels, you are always welcome in my house" he said to me many times. "I can be your mother in Hong Kong!", he would joke good-naturedly.
He is such a rare type of friend to me, especially because so much of what I go through, he has been through. Balancing a music and acting career, giving concerts in Taiwan, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, the U.S. and Japan, shooting commercials, living in hotels, feeling lonely, being heckled by paparazzi, being used or betrayed, staying focused on the artistry, being applauded, being rejected, negotiating contracts, ALL aspects of my job, he can relate to and understand.
In 2000, he asked me to play the part of his nephew in his directorial debut, "From Ashes to Ashes". Being a part of this production was so much fun, every day on the set was a spectacle watching this larger-than-life character, in his element. Even after the movie was finished filming, I went with him to the editing studio, and was moved by the amount of care he put into the post-production. He operated the equipment on his own, and did all of the edits personally.
Uncle Leslie taught me the importance of an artist respecting his own work. I realized that because he respects his own artistry so much, it rubs off on everyone else around him. When it comes to his work, he is always proud and confident, sometimes even boastful which I love. When he asked me, "Did you see Farewell My Concubine?", I found "yes" to be laughably insufficient. Instead, I said, "THAT was a fucking good movie". He nodded, "Yes, that was FUCKING good movie". It’s rare to find a talented artist who doesn’t second guess himself, and never apologizes for who he is. "I am who I am" is Uncle Leslie’s motto, and one of his favorite songs.
There are a million other things that I would like to say about how incredible this man is. It just comes to the point, however, where sighting examples is futile, there are just too many. For those of you who never got the chance to meet him, just take my word for it. He is special. For all his hard work, I thank him. Uncle Leslie is a huge influence in the entertainment industry, and in my life. It is strange that I still talk about him in the present tense.
Perhaps this is because he is a Legend, and a Legend by definition, lives on.

Dear friends,
This has been quite an eventful month. New York (my beloved city) and Washington were attacked by terrorists in the most heinous crime against the U.S. in recent history. I walked knee high in water that flooded not only my house, but the rest of Taiwan as well. On top of all this tumult, I finished my album, now known as Wei Yi. This month will stay with me for the rest of my life, as my world has so suddenly changed.
My album is done and about to be released, and I'm sure that you all will have ample opportunity to become acquainted with it...so I'm not going to talk about my new work just yet. Instead, I want to talk about peace and optimism in the face of tragedy. In the past few weeks, it seems we have all been called upon to bravely continue on with our lives with renewed vigor and perspective. As a musician from New York, this is a time of melancholy inspiration, the kind that sounds on a level as deep as humanity itself.
Thank God my family and friends are OK, and dear God, please bless the souls of those thousands of innocent people who lost their lives. I have been painfully reminded that there are some things that evil cannot destroy, and I think that is an ironically positive and valuable lesson. I want to take this opportunity to say to all my fans and the readers of COLOUR magazine...stay strong. It is up to us to keep the fire burning.

"Our Song" - A letter to the fans ( Frozen Dreams)
Dear Friends,
In every country, society, community, neighborhood, or family, the future lies in its children. The older generations look to the young with time in their eyes and hope in their hearts. The young look back at the old with ideas of tomorrow, with energy, and spirit. We, the young people of the global community, are it. And as I graduate from college, I see the endless possibilities of my destiny that I must take into my own hands, a future I've never been so excited to live it out. You, are probably at similar stages in your lives: young and smart, working hard, moving forward.
But what if you didn't have the freedom to determine your own destiny? Think of how you might feel every day if you were, at this young age of hope, completely denied hope. What if you were denied the excitement of your natural youth? This is hard for most of us to imagine, but when we think about the sort of oppression that is brought on by negligent parents, juvenile crime, child labor, lack of education, hunger, war...this is precisely the situation that is at hand.
How can a child grow up in these environments with hopes in her/his heart? So I'm coming to you all, my friends on the internet, to get a voice from the youth. I'm asking you all to write a few words or phrases (in Chinese or English) telling how you might feel if you were spending your days oppressed in any of these situations. Try to keep it as short as possible, but be as creative or direct as you want. I will take your words, organize them, set them to music, and record it as a song on my new album which is coming out in August, 1998. I am so excited to hear your ideas. If this works, it will be a dream come true for me. It has always been my goal to serve as a voice for the young. Now I have this chance...to sing your words. So please write back!
There are no rules to this song, except that by responding, you are giving me your permission to set your words to music and your responses must be in before July 1st! 親愛的朋友們: 05/17/1998
在每一個國家、社會、社區或家庭,未來都是在兒童的身上。
老一輩的人將一生的時間及希望投注於年輕一輩的身上;
而年輕一輩則回報予老一輩的人一個充滿理想及活力的未來。
我們,這一群年輕的人,這是世界的未來。
即將大學畢業的我,對未來從未如此興奮,
我看到了我的未來充滿了無限的可能性,
一個可以讓我去好好把握並去實現的未來。
而你也可能正處於與我相同的境遇;
一樣的年輕、聰明、努力工作,並正朝著自己的理想前進。
想想看你每天可能會有什麼樣的感受;
如果你不能自由地決定自己的未來?
如果你正處於一個對未來充滿希望的年齡,卻又對未來完全地絕望?
如果你被剝削了年輕人應有的青春快樂?
這些對絶大多數的我們是很難以想像的,
父母不盡職、青少年犯罪、童工、缺乏教育、飢餓、戰爭…等,
在如此不良的環境中成長的兒童們,如何對未來心存希望?
所以現在我收集來自年輕人的心聲,
請所有網路上的朋友們共襄盛舉,
如果你有類似的經歷(或是想像你處於相同不良的成長環境時可能的感受),
請儘量用簡短的、有創意的文字寫下你直接發自於內心的感受,
我將會整理並重組這些來自你心聲的文字,並將其譜上音樂,
收錄於我即將於 1998 年 8 月發行的專輯中。
有關因此而創作的歌曲版稅收入(包括作詞與作曲)都將完全捐贈給由王力宏及新力音樂決定贊助的與兒童福利相關的基金會慈善組織。
我非常高興地能藉由這次機會,聽到你對這件事的看法,如果創作這首歌曲的想法能夠實現,對我來說真的可算是一種「美夢成真」了。因為這是我一直想要爲年輕人所做的:唱出年輕人的心聲。
